Earlier this year, drummer / composer / conceptualist Jaimeo Brown transformed pain and deliverance into art on his debut album, Transcendence. The project fused Gee’s Bend Quilters southern spirituals with North Indian music and various electronic elements, generally uncommon for an acoustic modern jazz record. Now, Brown takes his cross-genre project a step further with support from Grammy┬« winning Transcendence guitarist and producer Chris Sholar, techno producer Carl Craig and hip-hop producer Q-Tip (who refer to the track as “fantastic” and “dope,” respectively), on a radical recasting of “Mean World.” The remix also takes advantage of the artists featured in the original track: saxophonist JD Allen and vocals from the Gee’s Bend Quilters as well as Falu.

Really feeling the free jazz angle of the original. Still warming up to the remix in comparison, but digging how the saxophone solo works within a techno framework. Drop it at the right time during a peak hour set and the place will go nuts.

Sickening. My two favorite artists on one record. This is amazing and one of the best collaborative moves I’ve seen in a while. Makes total sense! I’m caught up right now. I almost can’t breathe. The original is also breathtaking. Plus I’m upset that it takes me a month to get around to all my promos. Thanks for this!
